MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi says there's no place for political violence, ahead of this year's local government elections, adding that councillors must be able to do their jobs free from fear, intimidation, or threats.
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Co-operative Governance MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has condemned the murder of an eThekwini ward councillor, calling it an attack on local democracy.
African National Congress (ANC) Ward 17 councillor Sibusiso Khwela was shot and killed while working in his municipal office in Klaarwater on Thursday.
Buthelezi has warned that there is no place for political violence ahead of the November local government elections.
"The MEC has condemned the killing in the strongest terms, stating that such acts are intended to instil fear within communities particularly as the country prepares for the upcoming local government elections," says Buthelezi's spokesperson Siboniso Mngadi.
"MEC Buthelezi has urged community members who may have information, that could lead to the arrest of the responsible people to cooperate with the South African Police Service so that justice can be served for the Khwela family."
