KwaZulu-Natal's Political Killings Task Team is investigating the fatal shooting of ANC Ward 17 councillor Sibusiso Khwela in Klaarwater, west of Durban. Khwela was shot in his office in broad daylight by an unknown gunman who fled the scene on foot.

The Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in KwaZulu-Natal has stepped in to investigate the murder of an ANC councillor who was shot and killed in Klaarwater, west of Durban.

Sibusiso Khwela, who represented the ANC in Ward 17, was shot by an unknown man in his office on Thursday afternoon in full view of community members.

Khwela was one of the longest serving ANC councillors and was not due to return to the post in these upcoming local government elections.

Police confident suspect will be arrested

Seasoned PKTT investigators from the unit were seen arriving on the scene in their numbers on Thursday.

National SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the acting national police commissioner is confident the team will crack the case.

"The PKTT will lead and coordinate the investigation, with PKTT detectives already on the ground to ensure that those responsible for this senseless murder are identified, arrested and brought before the courts."

Meanwhile, the ANC has condemned the killing.

Regional spokesperson Thanduxolo Sabelo says political differences, criminality or any grievances can never justify taking a human life.

"We are very saddened as the ANC because we do not understand what was the motive behind killing such a wonderful man.

"We really hope that those who have caused this will be brought to book."
