Motorists travelling along the N3 toll route this Women's Day weekend are being urged to prepare for heavy traffic volumes, ongoing roadworks and potentially hazardous winter driving conditions.
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) said increased traffic is expected as thousands of holidaymakers travel between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to celebrate the long weekend.
Chief Operating Officer of the N3TC , Thania Dhoogra urged road users to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra travel time.
"Increased traffic volumes are expected on the N3 toll route as many holidaymakers head off to celebrate Women's Day. Together with ongoing construction and warnings of possible cold weather conditions setting in, road users are advised to plan and be prepared."
Motorists should also expect delays at several locations where deep excavation work is underway.
Lane restrictions remain in place at various construction sites along the route.
However, Dhoogra added that at least one lane will remain open in each direction; slow-moving traffic is anticipated.
She has reminded drivers to follow all road signs, keep emergency lanes clear, and remain alert to construction workers and vehicles operating near the roadway.
With winter conditions persisting across parts of the country, motorists are also being warned about the risk of unpredictable weather conditions.
"Together with colder temperatures, heavy winds, veld fires and smoke are common at this time of year. Road users are reminded to practise defensive driving and to adopt a risk management approach when travelling," said Dhoogra.
Dhoogra also reminded motorists to remain patient behind the wheel.
The N3TC says law enforcement agencies and Road Incident Management System partners will maintain a highly visible presence along strategic sections of the N3 between Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal and Heidelberg in Gauteng throughout the busy travel period.
