Pensioners who don’t want to spend money to get from point A to point B can benefit from free or discounted transport.
A handful of operators across the country offer these services to passengers over 60.
To access them, pensioners may need to provide age verification.
Where Over 60s Can Get Free Transport
Despite pensioners having a fixed income, only two transport services in the country’s major metros offer free transport to pensioners.
To access Rea Vaya for free, you need to be over 60. You can bring your ID or SASSA card for pensioners to a Rea Vaya customer care centre.
You’ll be able to load 20 trips for free. But can only travel for free during off-peak hours from 08:30 to 15:30 on weekdays.
A Re Yeng and Tshwane Bus Service
The A Re Yeng and Tshwane Bus Service is free if you’re over 65.
Pensioners between 60 and 65 can get a 25% discount on travel during off-peak hours. But first they need to apply for it with the City of Tshwane.
During peak periods, which run from 06:00 to 08:59 and 15:00 to 17:30 on weekdays, pensioners will be charged normal rates.
Where Over 60s Can Get Discounted Transport
But even if you can’t get free transport, who’s going to say no to a good discount?
Golden Arrow Bus Service (GABS)
To get discount rates on GABS, pensioners must get a pensioner pass to present when they buy their bus ticket.
They can get a pensioner pass at the Tollgate depot, 183 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock.
The service is only available on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 and 11:00
Afterwards, pensioners will benefit from discount rates from 08:00 to 16:00. They can also buy a 10-journey card for R78.50, valid for 60 days.
Metrorail offers a 50% discount to pensioners during off-peak periods. The off-peak period runs from 09:00 to 15:00.
To access the discount, pensioners need to visit their ticket office during the off-peak period and purchase a one-way or return ticket.
With the discount, pensioners can travel one-way between Monday and Saturday from R5 to R7.50.
Concession cards are available to pensioners at a cost of R50.
Pensioners can apply for the card at the Durban Transport Bus Depot at 102 Johannes Nkosi Street.
Applications are only open on Tuesdays between 09:00 and 15:00, and pensioners must provide their original ID.
