The KZN Department of Cooperative Governance is urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel amid severe weather, after two people died in a crash in Howick.
As severe weather continues to batter KwaZulu-Natal, the provincial Department of Co-operative Governance is urging residents to avoid all non-essential travel.
It comes after two people died in a crash on the R617, near Mphophomeni in Howick on Monday - after the driver lost control on a wet road.
The severe weather has also led to several road closures in KZN, including parts of the N3.
"Our joint operating cluster is closely monitoring all the municipalities or the areas that are likely to be affected by the heavy rains and snowfall. The communities are urged to remain indoors," says KZN Cogta spokesperson, Siboniso Mngadi.
KZN Transport has warned motorists to slow down and take extra care on wet, slippery roads.
Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says road teams and grader operators are already monitoring major routes and areas expecting more snow.
He says it is currently overcast from Cedara towards Midway along the N3, while drizzle has been reported between Harrismith and Van Reenen.
" [The] N11 AmaJuba Pass is open both directions. Snow is beginning to clear towards Memel. Bothas Pass to Memel is clear. The MEC is quite happy with how the RTI team, as well as the operators of graders have been executing the snowfall response plan."
Impendle mother says child cannot attend school
On Monday, officials revealed several residents were in distress in the Impendle Local Municipality.
Thembi Madlala, who is from the area, says she is worried about how her child will get to school this week.
"My child cannot attend school because the roads outside are muddy and the rivers are full.
"Even the transport taking my child to school says they cannot transport children to school because there are many car accidents occurring, as we are facing this difficult weather outside. So, my child cannot attend school up until the weather condition changes."
