Wynberg Girls’ High School is mourning the loss of Grade 11 learner Neema Parusia Muhigirwa, who has died after what the school described as a courageous battle with significant health challenges.
In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media, the Cape Town school remembered Neema as a young woman whose resilience, determination and positive spirit inspired those around her.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of one of our Grade 11 learners, Neema Parusia Muhigirwa,” the school said.
According to the school, Neema faced serious health challenges over a number of years with “remarkable strength and an enduringly positive spirit.”
Earlier this year, Wynberg Girls’ High School honoured Neema by awarding her the Class of 1952 Honour Plate, recognising her tenacity, courage and the way she embodied the school’s motto, “Honour Before Honours.”
The school said the recognition held special meaning for Neema.
“She later told us that receiving this award had been one of the happiest moments of her life,” the tribute read.
The school extended its deepest condolences to Neema’s family, friends and everyone who knew her during this difficult time.
“Our hearts are with Neema’s family, friends and all those who knew and loved her,” the school said.
Reflecting on her legacy, the school added that although her time at Wynberg Girls’ High School was far too short, her courage, warmth and strength would leave a lasting impression on the school community.
“Neema’s time with us was far too short, but her courage, warmth and strength will remain part of our Wynberg story.
“Rest peacefully, Neema. You will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.”
The news of Neema’s passing comes days after the report that a past pupil and a current learner at St Stithians College in Gauteng had been found dead at a resort in Sabie in Mpumalanga.
