In an ambitious venture that promises to elevate South Africa's digital infrastructure, start-up Stratos Lab has begun implementing what it claims will be the most powerful AI cloud on the African continent. This initiative, featuring Nvidia's latest B300 "Blackwell Ultra" GPUs, was unveiled at the Activate AI conference in Cape Town, signaling a significant step forward for AI technology in the region. The project is a collaboration that includes Stratos Lab, Dubai-based integrator Ecoblox, and carrier-neutral operator Digital Parks Africa (DPA), with initial hosting taking place at DPA’s data centre in Centurion, north of Johannesburg.

The first phase of deployment will include 50 Giga Computing servers equipped with 400 Nvidia B300 GPUs, expected to deliver an impressive 7.2 exaflops of throughput. Doug Makishima, interim CEO of Ecoblox, indicated that the order for these GPUs was placed about a month ago and they are currently completing export compliance checks with Taiwanese authorities. He anticipates the GPUs will ship within the next two to three weeks by air freight, completing an important milestone in the project's timeline.

Stratos Lab CEO Chris Mostert stated that the layout, cooling, and power configurations at DPA’s Samrand campus will be finalized shortly, with installation expected to proceed in stages over the coming weeks. Overall investment in this advanced computational power is pegged at approximately USD 25 million, with additional discussions for matching funds underway. While the claim of launching the “most powerful” AI cloud is contended by some rivals, particularly Cassava Technologies, Makishima stressed the technological advantage of the newer Blackwell architecture chips they are employing, asserting their superior processing capabilities.

Each of the 50 servers in this initial deployment can process up to 144 petaflops of computing power as a low-precision measure known as exaflops, though higher-precision computations yield different results and comparisons. The flexibility of the planned cluster will serve various workloads, catering to both GPU-as-a-service and training or inference tasks—a necessity for clients leaning towards inference in emerging AI applications.
