Athletes will experience the beauty of the KZN Midlands during the event.
The Full Story
The Midlands Ultra Triathlon is set to return on Sunday, September 13, 2026, allowing athletes to engage in a unique endurance challenge amidst the stunning landscapes of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Designed to showcase the area's distinctive beauty, the event is based at the iconic Midmar Dam, combining open-water swimming, cycling, and running to create a memorable race experience. Competitors in the Ultra and Aquabike categories will kick off their day with a 1.6 km open-water swim in Midmar Dam, followed by a 55 km cycling route that traverses the picturesque surroundings.
The event concludes with a scenic 12 km run within the Midmar Dam precinct. For those new to the sport, the Sprint event offers a more accessible option, featuring a 750 m swim, 20 km cycle, and 5 km run, allowing participants to enjoy the same beautiful setting without the longer distances. The cycling route promises a true taste of the Midlands, as athletes navigate the rolling hills and smooth tarmacs while passing notable landmarks, including the renowned Nelson Mandela Capture Site and Piggly Wiggly Farm Stall.
This integration of nature, culture, and sport offers an enriching experience beyond traditional urban triathlons. Race Director Damian Bradley noted, "You can race a triathlon anywhere, but very few places allow the course itself to become such an important part of the experience." The combination of swimming in the dam, cycling amidst rolling countryside, and finishing in the scenic dam grounds sets the Midlands Ultra apart from typical triathlon events.
The return to this scenic venue comes after successful events held in the past, making Midmar Dam one of South Africa's premier endurance sport locations. This year's event aims to accommodate various competitor levels, from seasoned athletes to first-time participants looking for an introduction to multi-discipline racing. Athletes will not only face the physical challenges of swimming, cycling, and running but will also celebrate the natural beauty of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. As the event approaches, the community awaits the excitement of witnessing athletes pushing their limits while enjoying the picturesque environment that defines this region.
With pristine waters, breathtaking landscapes, and the atmosphere of camaraderie, the Midlands Ultra Triathlon promises to be a memorable experience for all involved, making it a significant event on the local sports calendar.
