A 62-year-old man is expected to appear before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Friday after being arrested for allegedly running a clandestine drug manufacturing operation on a communal farm in Klipvoorstad, near Jericho, North West. His arrest follows police action prompted by community reports of suspicious behaviour and a strong chemical smell from the property. The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, and authorities are still searching for three other men who reportedly fled into nearby bushes when police arrived.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), their Crime Intelligence Unit, along with the Brits Trio Task Team and Jericho Visible Policing, responded to the community's concerns and conducted a raid on the farm. Upon arrival, police noted a white Mahindra bakkie parked at the premises. The suspect, claiming ownership of the property, reportedly consented to a search, which uncovered various substances, equipment, and tools indicative of illicit drug manufacturing.
The search, supported by the Hartbeespoortdam K9 Unit and a drone pilot, unfortunately did not locate the fleeing individuals. Preliminary findings suggested the site was being used to produce crystal methamphetamine, informally known as 'cat'. During the operation, police seized raw materials, chemicals, and manufacturing tools, alongside a significant quantity of the suspected final product.
The bakkie parked outside was also confiscated for further scrutiny, and the matter has since been transferred to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Rustenburg. North West MEC for Community Safety, Tsotso Tlhapi, applauded the collaboration between law enforcement and community members, underscoring the importance of shared information in combating crime, particularly regarding drug-related issues which are detrimental to local youth. "With this working relationship, we will win the fight against crime, particularly drug-related crimes, because drugs are destroying the lives of our children," Tlhapi stated after the operation.
She called for increased police presence in rural areas, addressing concerns from residents about unidentified individuals and compliance issues with local liquor outlets. "We need police visibility in all our villages and townships because this helps to deter criminal activities," she added. Ongoing community collaboration and strengthened policing structures are essential aims in Tlhapi's plea for resources and vigilance among residents.
The SAPS Provincial Commissioner in North West, Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams, also commended the community members who provided crucial tips leading to this operation, emphasizing that a united front is vital in the fight against drugs.
