Iris, designed to assist teachers by answering questions, explaining concepts, and logging student performance, works in all 11 official languages and adheres to the South African curriculum from grade R to matric. The vision of Iris is to serve as an educational assistant rather than a replacement for human teachers, taking on tasks like marking to allow teachers to focus on direct instruction. Deputy Science Minister Nomalungelo Gina highlighted Iris as evidence of South Africa’s ability to innovate technologically.
