The Full Story

Not every complaint this week came from someone stuck waiting on a review they’d already done before. One comment came from a beneficiary going through the review process for the first time and getting nothing to show for it.

“I did review last month still I didn’t get the money,” read one Facebook comment this week, echoed by dozens of replies. “I did review but my keeps on declining… Why,” added another, with a third simply replying, “mine too.”

The frustration spread quickly across the comment section, with beneficiaries comparing notes on reviews they believed were already settled.

SASSA confirms a separate payment day for reviewed grants

In its August payment announcement, SASSA said beneficiaries whose grants have been identified for review will not be paid during the normal three-day cycle. Instead, their payments fall on a fourth payment day, this month landing on Friday, 7 August.

SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said the agency reminds beneficiaries whose grants are under review that they will not receive their money during the standard cycle used for Older Persons, Disability, and Children’s Grants, and should instead expect it on the fourth day. The agency has repeated that beneficiaries who see no payment on the usual dates should not assume something has gone wrong, and should not rush to a local office before the fourth day arrives.

What SASSA has warned beneficiaries to do next

SASSA has said that once a reviewed beneficiary receives their grant on the fourth payment day, they are still required to visit their nearest SASSA office during the month to complete the review process in full. The agency has been direct about the consequence of not doing so: beneficiaries who fail to respond to a review request risk having their grant suspended or lapsed under the Social Assistance Act.

SASSA has also reminded beneficiaries to keep their cell phone numbers up to date, since review notifications are sent by SMS, and the agency can only reach beneficiaries using the contact details already in its system. Anyone unsure of where their review stands can call the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11, weekdays between 8:00 and 17:00.
