Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife says the man was found alive near Rhino Peak after going missing in freezing conditions on Monday.

A man has been rescued after getting lost during a hike in the southern Drakensberg.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife says he is being treated in hospital, where doctors say he remains weak and unsteady, but is expected to survive.

He was found near Rhino Peak on Tuesday, after a massive overnight rescue operation in freezing conditions.

Ezemvelo's Musa Mntambo says the hiker went missing in the Garden Castle Nature Reserve on Monday.

He says conservation teams sprung into action and searched through the night in difficult weather conditions and snow.

"We sent our teams on Monday evening. They searched throughout the night and also contacted mountain rescue who sent their club with one helicopter to look for him.

"He was found still alive and cold in the Drakensberg mountain and was taken to hospital.

"He is currently in hospital. The doctors have told us that he is doing well, and he is still weak and wobbly but he will survive."
