The National Shelter Movement of SA has welcomed the appointment of seven members to the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, while calling for stronger support for GBVF survivors.
The National Shelter Movement of South Africa says it hopes the new National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide will deliver real change.
The organisation says the appointments must translate to stronger support for survivors and greater accountability.
The council has been appointed for a three-year term to provide strategic leadership and coordinate South Africa's response to GBVF.
The movement's Joy Lange says the appointment of Dr Zubeida Dangor, a leading expert in the fight against the scourge, demonstrates a commitment to tackling one of the country's most urgent challenges.
New GBVF council to strengthen coordination
"Our member organisations engage with survivors every day. So we understand both the realities they face and the gaps that still exist in protection, support and long-term recovery.
"This practical experience ensures that policies and decisions remain grounded in the lived experiences of survivors."
The organisation says it hopes the council will strengthen coordination across government and civil society.
