Next week, South Africans can enjoy free entry to many national parks as part of the annual SANParks Week, running from 7 to 13 September 2026. Visitors simply need a valid South African ID book or smart ID card to gain free access. The initiative, which began in 2006, aims to connect South Africans with their natural heritage while promoting conservation efforts.
Over the years, SANParks Week has attracted more than 105,000 visitors in 2025 alone, with nearly one million visitors participating since its inception. Most of the 21 parks under SANParks are included in this free entry offer, with the majority allowing access all week long. However, a few notable parks have specific conditions.
Kruger National Park, West Coast National Park, and Augrabies Falls National Park will only permit free access on weekdays from Monday, 7 September, to Friday, 11 September, excluding the weekend. Certain sections are notably excluded: the Boulders Penguin Colony at Table Mountain National Park and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will not participate in the free access initiative. Namaqua National Park will also be absent from this year's offer.
