The fire broke out at the Puntas Hill informal settlement on Wednesday afternoon, leaving 15 families without a roof over their heads.

A fire tore through an informal settlement in Springfield, Durban, leaving 15 families homeless.

The blaze at the Puntas Hill informal settlement started late on Wednesday afternoon.

eThekwini Fire Divisional Commander Nqabakazi Nqoro says over a dozen structures were destroyed.

She says one formal structure was also damaged while a car was gutted.

"Firefighter operations commenced immediately and the fire was brought under control at around 5pm. We [used] three rescue pumps and one water carrier [during] the incident."

Nqoro says there were no casualties reported.

The displaced residents are being accommodated by neighbours and relatives.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance Department says disaster management teams are assessing the damage and assisting affected families.
