Sizekhaya are the new national lottery operators in South Africa having officially taken over from ITHUBA on 1 June 2026.
They have introduced a host of changes, including the new Lotto 5 Max which replaced the Lotto Plus 2 draw.
As a reminder, Lotto, Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto 5 Max draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 21:00, live on e-tv and SABC 2.
Those wishing to play have until 20:40 on the day of each draw to do so.
The Lotto costs R5 per board. Players match six numbers from a pool of 52, either self-selected or via Quick Pick.
Adding a Lotto Plus 1 entry costs an extra R2.50 per board, giving a second shot at winning from the same numbers, bringing the combined cost to R7.50 per board if you play both.
Adding a Lotto 5 Max entry costs another R2.50 per board, giving a third shot at winning from the same numbers, bringing the combined cost to R10 per board if you play all three.
The Lotto 5 Max draw carries a built-in guarantee.
If nobody matches all six numbers plus the bonus ball on the final draw of the calendar month, the jackpot doesn’t roll over into the following month.
Instead, it drops down to Division 2 winners, or Division 3 if there are no Division 2 winners either.
This only applies to that one final draw each month.
Every other Lotto 5 Max draw during the month works exactly the same way as it always has, rolling over if nobody wins.
Tickets are available at authorised National Lottery retailers, on the National Lottery website and app, or via USSD by dialling 1207529#.
If you’re playing PowerBall through a banking app, Capitec, FNB, Absa, Nedbank, Standard Bank, TymeBank and African Bank all let you select numbers or Quick Pick directly from your phone before the cutoff.
Winners of R50 000 or more receive free trauma counselling and financial advice, and all National Lottery winnings are paid tax-free directly into the winner’s account.
