The family of a man who was run over by an eThekwini municipal water tanker in Adams Mission is calling for accountability.
Celani Zungu's brother, who witnessed the incident and rushed him to hospital, says his family wants answers and justice as police continue with their investigation into the incident.
Zungu died at a healthcare facility after he was knocked down on Sunday.
His brother, Sakhile Zungu, who was the last person to see him alive, told Newswatch they had gone to check out a commotion unfolding between community members and the water tanker driver.
Zungu said he then saw the truck plough into Celani.
"It is hard for me to get this off my mind because I watched it happen right in front of my very own eyes.
"I am the one who rushed him to the hospital. I saw how badly injured he was. It is so painful. I won't say much, but I hope justice will be served and that the law will take its course."
Zungu said two other people narrowly escaped injuries moments before the truck struck his brother.
The grieving family says while they mourn the tragedy that has befallen them, they still want answers and justice.
MAYOR VISITS FAMILY AS POLICE PROBE CULPABLE HOMICIDE CASE
Police in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are investigating after of culpable homicide was registered.
eThekwini spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said the municipality was also probing the matter internally.
"The municipality is cooperating fully with SAPS (South African Police Service) and has also initiated its own internal processes.
"As the matter is under investigation, the municipality is not in a position to comment on the circumstances that led to the incident," said Mzila.
Meanwhile, during a visit to the family on Monday, Mayor Cyril Xaba told journalists that the driver has yet to be apprehended.
He said the family will be assisted with the funeral arrangements.
"It's such a tragic incident to have happened. We can't, for now, speculate on what might have sparked the whole incident. We leave that to the police."
