Security preparations are in place for the 46th SADC Summit in Durban, with NATJOINTS chairperson Tebello Mosikili saying the city is stable, secure and ready to host regional leaders. Heads of State and government officials will begin arriving in South Africa ahead of the summit next Sunday and Monday.
Security preparations have been put in place as Durban gets ready for the 46th SADC Summit.
That is the assurance from NATJOINTS chairperson Tebello Mosikili, who says the city is secure, and ready to host regional leaders.
On Wednesday, heads of state and government officials from various SADC member countries will begin arriving in South Africa.
The summit, which takes place on Sunday and Monday, will be chaired by President Cyril Ramaphosa and will address a wide range of issues aimed at accelerating regional development.
Intelligence structures monitoring threats
Mosikili says security operations began last week. She was speaking during a media briefing at the Durban ICC on Tuesday night.
"Our intelligence structures are already on the ground. We are continuously assessing the security environment and all relevant law enforcement and security agencies are working together to identify, prevent, and respond to any potential threats."
She has warned that authorities will deal with any disruptions during the summit.
"South Africa is a country where the rule of law is upheld. Anyone who seeks to threaten public safety, compromise the security of the summit, or disrupt programs or events will be dealt with firmly and within the confines of the law."
Undocumented man arrested over accreditation attempt
An undocumented foreign national was arrested after allegedly attempting to obtain accreditation for the summit.
Mosikili says the man claimed to be a performing artist but failed to provide proof of his legal status in the country.
"To those that will want to follow, the message is clear. No accreditation, no access, no documentation, no attempt to acquire accreditation. If you are not accredited to attend the summit or any of its authorised activities, stay far. Stay at home. Stay very far from ICC."
