Four pupils, aged between 15 and 20, have been arrested and charged with murder.
There are calls for tighter safety measures in schools after a pupil was beaten to death at a high school in Sundumbili on the north coast.
“The Department of Education has to make sure that we tighten all the screws pertaining to safety and security in schools of learners and also of educators,” the National Teachers’ Union’s Mathemba Mabija said on Wednesday.
The attack happened on school grounds on Tuesday morning.
Police have since arrested four pupils, aged between 15 and 20, on murder charges.
The union warned that schools must remain places of learning, not violence.
Mabija urged learners to report conflict before it escalates.
He added that anti-bullying awareness campaigns must be intensified to help prevent similar tragedies.
“We need to continuously do these campaigns against bullying. We need to continuously conscientise our learners and, uh, also conscientise them about the impact and the consequences of this bullying within the school premises.
“As much as this has happened, we're not going to deter nor stop from conscientising and also making sure that there is safety in our schools.”
