The councillor was meeting with community members in his office when a man, posing as someone needing help, drew a firearm and shot him several times.
A local councillor has been shot and killed in Klaarwater near Pinetown.
The man was busy working when he came under attack this afternoon.
Police investigators are combing the area.
Police say the councillor was meeting with community members in his office when a man, posing as someone needing help, drew a firearm and shot the councillor several times.
"Information available at this stage suggests that the deceased was in his office with several community members when an unknown man arrived and posed as someone who needed assistance from the deceased.
The deceased reportedly went outside to assist the man when the suspect drew a firearm and shot him several times. He was declared dead at the scene."
KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the councillor died on the scene. "The suspect fled the scene on foot. The motive of the killing remains unknown at this stage, and a manhunt for the suspect is underway."
Authorities are in the process of informing his next of kin.
