Dolly Parton Musical Set for Broadway as Planned, Honouring Her Legacy
'Dolly: A True Original Musical' preview to begin December 7, following the late icon's wishes.
The highly anticipated Broadway production of "Dolly: A True Original Musical" is set to proceed as scheduled, beginning previews on December 7 at the St. James Theatre in New York City. This announcement comes shortly after the passing of country legend Dolly Parton on August 25, 2026, marking a significant moment for both her fans and the theatre community.
In a statement, producers confirmed that the production will move forward "as was Dolly's wish," emphasising the importance of the show in honouring her incredible legacy. Parton was not only a legendary artist but also deeply involved in the musical's creation as a co-writer and producer, collaborating with Maria S. Schlatter for the book. Featuring some of her most beloved songs, such as "I Will Always Love You," "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and introducing new music designed specifically for the production, this musical aims to celebrate Parton's life and career.
The official opening night is scheduled for January 19, 2027, which would have been Parton's 81st birthday, adding a poignant touch to an already meaningful event. While there have been no remarks on potential tributes during the performances, the show is expected to resonate deeply with audiences who cherished Parton's contributions to both music and culture.
The production had its world premiere in Nashville in July 2025 before making its way to Broadway. Renowned director Bartlett Sher, a Tony winner for his work on "South Pacific," is at the helm of this new musical experience. Although casting announcements have yet to be revealed, previous performances in Nashville featured Carrie St. Louis, Katie Rose Clarke, and Quinn Titcomb playing Parton at various stages of her journey.
Parton's involvement in theatre is not new; she also composed the Tony-nominated score for the adaptation of "9 to 5: The Musical," which premiered on Broadway in 2009, showcasing her versatility as an artist.
The transition into Broadway comes with emotional weight following Parton's death at the age of 80. The news of her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow celebrities and fans alike, reflecting the profound impact she had.
As fans eagerly await the musical's debut, it is clear that "Dolly: A True Original Musical" will serve not only as entertainment but also as a heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of Dolly Parton, ensuring her spirit continues to shine on stage.
